Spooky Halloween Cookies

Unpopular opinion time: Halloween is the worst. The idea that this holiday gives the masses free rein to dress up in masks and costumes and go from door to door and we’re just expected to open our door for strangers all night long is enough to put me over the edge as a vulnerable female. I hated the idea of dressing up in costumes when I was little, and I hate it even more now. If trick-or-treating is canceled this year due to COVID-19, I will sit merrily on my couch on October 31st, knowing that unwanted visitors will not be approaching my doorstep and soliciting candy that I would quite frankly rather just eat myself.

HOWEVER: I will admit that an entire holiday dedicated to eating chocolate and treats has its perks; namely, the aforementioned chocolate and treats. So these Spooky Halloween Cookies are a nod to the only wonderful part of this heinous, horrifying holiday. The double dark chocolate cookies are filled to the brim with chocolate chunks, Halloween Oreos, Halloween sprinkles, and spooky eyeballs. They’re pretty fun, they’re pretty festive, and if I love them this much and I think Halloween is nightmarish, I imagine that those of you with more typical feelings about Halloween will enjoy them as well.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chunks I used Trader Joes Belgian Milk Chocolate (Plus more for sprinkling on top)
  • 16 Halloween Oreos crushed (plus more for sprinkling on top)
  • Halloween Sprinkles
  • Candy eyeballs/ Sprinkle eyeballs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together sugars, butter, and vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time. Then gradually stir in the flour/cocoa mixture. Fold in the chocolate chunks and Halloween Oreos. Save a few chocolate chunks and Oreos for sprinkling on the tops of the cookies after they come out of the oven.
  3. Use a tablespoon or cookie dough school to scoop the dough and place 2 inches apart on a baking sheet. I like to make about 18 larger cookies, which comes to about 3 cookie dough scoops each. For these larger cookies, only put 6 on each pan. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes and top with the remaining chocolate chunks, Halloween Oreos, Halloween Sprinkles, and eyeball candies. Let cookies cool for about 10 minutes on the baking sheet. Enjoy!
