Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cream Cookies

Hershey’s Cookies N Creme is one of the most underrated chocolate bars out there. I’ve loved them since I was a kid, but back then, the Cookies N Creme came in nugget form, not in candy bar form. To be honest, nothing really beats the nugget. Not the Hershey’s Kiss, and not the Hershey’s bar. That may be an unpopular opinion, but it’s one that I’ve felt for a while now. Perhaps it’s because I nostalgically associate the nuggets with chicken nuggets, another wonderful kind of nugget from my childhood. Or, could it be because I have a distinct memory of eating a Cookies N Creme during Passover one year as a young child of 8 or 9, and I realized I “broke” Passover by eating one (you’re not supposed to have any leavened grains during Passover; the little Oreo pieces in the Cookie’s N Creme technically count as a leavened grain) and I started crying when I realized what I had done but it was so delicious that it was totally worth it and I didn’t tell anyone until literally now? I may never know the exact origins of this love for the white chocolate crunchy-cookie nugget, but like most things, I know it has something to do with my many childhood food-related memories that tend to wind their way into almost everything I bake.  Btw, it feels really good to get that whole Passover confession off my chest.

So why not use Cookies N Creme nuggets in these Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cream Cookies, you might be asking? Well, as much as I talk the nugget talk, I honestly hadn’t thought about the bite-sized chocolates in quite some time. Come to think of it, I certainly hadn’t seen the Cookies N Creme nuggets in quite some time either. Were the cookie-filled, white chocolate nuggets I used to love still available for purchase? I hunted and hunted to no avail. As it turns out, they were discontinued in 2006, according to a posting on junkfoodblog.com. I honestly feel like a sham starting this blog post by writing an entire paragraph about my love for the Cookies N Creme nuggets when I didn’t even realize that they had no longer been in existence for the past 14 years, but I guess now it all makes perfect sense that I only have distinct childhood memories of them, and really none past the age of my tween years. Sigh.

Well, nuggets or no nuggets, I had to keep moving forward. I was on a mission to bring my vision of Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cream Cookies to life. These cookies are stuffed with chunks of Hershey’s Cookies N Creme candy bars (they’re still fabulous, I assure you) and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Another chunk of Cookies N Creme bar sits on top, and then the cookies are dusted with Oreo cookie crumbs. Though it’s kind of shame these cookies are nugget-less, the combination of a warm and gooey double chocolate cookie stuffed with Hershey’s Cookies N Creme and topped with Oreo pieces almost brought me to tears (the good kind) and if you too are the kind of person that cries about cookies, they might just make you cry too.

Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cream Cookies

Servings 12 large cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 bag Cookies N Cream Candy candy bars I bought the small bars
  • 1/2 cup of crushed Oreo crumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and prepare two baking sheets by spraying with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together sugars, butter, and vanilla. Add the eggs, one at a time. Then gradually stir in the flour/cocoa mixture. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  3. Use a cookie dough scoop about 12 balls of dough and place on baking sheets. Slightly flatten the cookie dough balls, and place a couple of Hershey's Cookies N Creme pieces on it. Then, scoop another ball of dough for the "top" of each cookie, pressing around the sides so that the Cookies N Creme bar is stuffed in the middle. Bake cookies for about 10-12 minutes (bigger cookies will take longer). Press another Hershey's Cookies N Creme piece on the top of each cookie, and sprinkle with crushed Oreos. Let cookies cool for about 10 minutes on the baking sheet before serving. Enjoy!
