Cliché of the day: Oatmeal Raisin Cookies remind me of my grandmother. I know what you’re thinking: everyone says that the age-old cookie conjures up various childhood memories of grandma’s house, but I certainly don’t remember my grandmother ever making them. Let me explain. You see, when I was little, my family would go visit my grandparents down in Florida each winter. Before we’d fly south, my grandmother, Deedee, would call us up to inquire about our favorite eats of the moment- cereals, lunch meats, desserts, you name it. Then, she’d go out and buy everything that made the list, so that she could spoil us throughout the week in between trips to the pool and outings to the flea market that we were weirdly obsessed with when we were little. Every year, she’d buy a big container of Costco’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookies for my brother, who chose these as his go-to favorite snack. Whenever she took out the cookie bin, excited to treat us with a “sweet cracker” just minutes after finishing breakfast, I’d think to myself, “I hate raisins”, and then happily ignore my supposed preference as I consumed mass amounts of the oatmeal cookies. While the cookies weren’t necessarily made with love by my grandmother, they were 100% purchased with loved, and thus, my grandmother-oatmeal-raisin-association still stands strong today.

While these cookies get a lot of animosity from the raisin-haters of the world, I think they’re delicious and comforting and I was excited to make a batch to send to my in-laws for their 30th anniversary last week. My mother-in-law mentioned a couple months ago that oatmeal raisin was her all-time favorite, and I figured that my father-in-law, who isn’t crazy about desserts, would enjoy this classic, not-too-sweet cookie. They’re super soft and chewy, studded with raisins, and swirled with notes of cinnamon. Plus, the whole “oatmeal” thing means that they make a perfectly acceptable breakfast cookie as well. If grandma didn’t send you on your way with an oatmeal raisin recipe, look no further. I don’t quite remember how they compare to Deedee’s Costco cookie container if I’m being honest, but I can tell you that they’re delicious just the same.

 

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup raisins

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Grease two cookie sheets and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Using an electric mixer, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar for 1-2 minutes until well combined. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until smooth and creamy.
  4. Slowly pour in the flour mixture and continue mixing until just combined, then mix in the oats and raisins until fully combined, making sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  5. Cover the cookie dough tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Once the dough is chilled, remove it from the refrigerator. Scoop the cookie dough, form into 2" balls, and drop onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each piece of cookie dough. Press down with your hand to flatten each ball of cookie dough slightly (make sure not to flatten them completely, just slightly).
  7. Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are lightly golden brown and the top is set. Remove from the oven and cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling, about 20-30 more minutes. Enjoy!
